Photographs from Authentic Alaska: Voices of Its Native Writers
Authentic Alaska offers 38 black & white photographs, many of them contemporary portraits of the contributors to the anthology. These sample photographs by northwest Alaska photographer Jim Magdanz accompany stories titled "How to Make Seal Oil" by Carol Harris, "A First-Hand Account of the Kotzebue's Water System Freeze-Up" by Ben Uvigaq Brantley, and "Growing Up in Kivalina on Alaska's Remote Arctic Coast" by Dollie Ahyahlooktook Hawley. The text also features historical photographs of "Children with polar bear hide," "Twelve-year-old girl preparing seal," "Inupiaq boy with bucket for picking berries," and other images of subsistence activities.

Susan B. Andrews John Creed
Susan B. Andrews and John Creed are writers, editors and educators. Since the late 1980s, Professors Andrews and Creed have taught humanities and journalism at Kotzebue-based Chukchi College, a branch of the University of Alaska. Kotzebue lies about 26 miles above the Arctic Circle in northwest Alaska and some 175 miles from the eastern tip of Russia. Their anthology of Alaska Native student writers, Authentic Alaska: Voices of Its Native Writers, is part of an ongoing cultural journalism project. Former full-time journalists, since joining the UA faculty they have authored non-fiction articles, columns, and book reviews for newspapers, magazines, websites, blogs, and scholarly journals.
